Rescue Dog
1-1 Training Programme
If you have brought a rescue dog into your home, first of all THANK YOU! You have done a wonderful thing by giving one of these precious lives another chance.
Rescue dogs often need a specific and particularly sympathetic approach to training as we often don’t know the full history of the dog. It is possible that your new family member already has a few issues or is struggling and I would love to help.
1-1 Rehabilitation Programme
The most important thing for any rescue dog, is that trust is built. The dog needs to gain trust in you and its new environment and this can come slowly in some instances. Training needs to happen at a pace that your dog can cope with, so that you don't ask too much too soon, to rebuild their confidence.
What we will cover in the programme:
-
We will introduce freework, which builds confidence through choice.
-
We will implement training exercises that build attachment to you.
-
We will implement training exercises that build focus on you.
-
You will learn the Rucksack walk (Steve Mann). A wonderful way to bond with your dog.
-
We will discuss the importance of time, patience and eliminating pressure.
-
You will be taught many enrichment activities that you can use throughout the day, to help your dog practice calm, natural behaviours.
-
We will assess how your dog feels and make adjustments to their environment and training to account for this.
-
We will discuss safe interactions with new people, new dogs and important socialisation, including visits to the vet, handling, grooming and use of walking equipment.
-
Together we will help your dog feel safe and confident which are the crucial first steps for a successful relationship.
